What happens to my emails if there’s a temporary service pause?

At Conexcol Cloud, we understand that email is a vital tool for your business. That’s why we want to explain in simple terms what happens to your messages if there's a brief interruption in mail service.

Emails Are Not Lost

If someone sends you a message and your mail server is temporarily unavailable, the email is not lost or deleted. Email systems on the Internet are designed to handle these situations automatically and reliably.

What Happens in the Meantime?

The sending server recognizes that it could not deliver the message and, without any action required from you, it queues the message and retries delivery later. This process repeats over several hours, allowing enough time for service to be restored.

What Does This Mean for You?

Even if there is a short service interruption, you can rest assured: your emails will be delivered as soon as the server is back online.

This is standard behavior across email systems worldwide and one of the reasons why email remains a highly reliable communication method.

Additional Technical Information

This behavior is defined by the SMTP protocol, as specified in RFC 5321. When the destination mail server (MX) is temporarily unreachable, the sending server does not discard the message. Instead:

  • The message is placed in the sender’s delivery queue.
  • It retries delivery automatically over a configurable period (typically 48 to 120 hours).
  • If all delivery attempts fail, a bounce message is returned to the sender.

This process requires no user intervention and ensures that short service interruptions do not result in lost emails.
